Up Close and Personal

January 10, 2013

Christmas and New Year’s Eve had come and gone. The only thing we looked forward to now was getting to see Liz and Erica’s Peanut.

I drove Andréa to meet them for the NT scan. I knew I couldn’t be in the room, since they usually allowed only one extra person and were already making an exception for both Liz and Erica to be in there. I would be in the waiting room for support, though. I was eager to hear all the great news.

We met in the waiting room of the perinatal office. It was in a new building only a block away from Dr. Rose’s office and the hospital, the John Muir Medical Center, where we were planning to have the baby delivered. The waiting room was large enough for us all to sit comfortably. It was a restful place, with nicely painted mauve walls and two sections of tan leather chairs. While we waited, we admired the poster-sized black-and-white photos of children hanging on the walls. There was also a large flat-screen TV suspended from the ceiling. It was tuned to a National Geographic wildlife video with Oprah Winfrey narrating.

We sat down and talked about how exciting this detailed ultrasound would be.

“Get them to print out a picture so I can see Peanut too,” I begged Erica.

She patted her purse and told Andréa that she had January’s payment for her just as the waiting room door swung open and the nurse called for Andréa. I stayed behind, trying unsuccessfully to focus on Oprah talking about flocks of birds in the Serengeti. My thoughts were certainly not on birds in Africa!

About twenty minutes later, the door to the waiting room opened. I expected to see a nurse, but it was Liz. She leaned out the door and beckoned me to come in. I was up and on my way in a second.

“They’re going to let me in? I get to see?” I asked her excitedly.

Liz shook her head. “No,” she said in a low voice. “There’s something wrong with the baby.”
